Chapter Twenty-Two

NATHEN

A giant ornately decorated room ornamented with book-lined walls surrounded them. Scintillating stained glass windows with moving patterns interrupted the shelves, and Nathen marveled at how the light was so very close to the fractals they both had tattooed onto their chests. The polished mahogany floor reflected the room and gave it a water-like effect. Wooden tables with a cornucopia of food and drink were strewn with his favorite dishes from childhood, and many others he did not recognize but somehow knew were Cameron’s. Nathen and Cameron lay on a large four-poster bed, the well carved wooden poles inlaid with mother of pearl and quartz. The bed sheets were decorated with fine silver, gold, red, and royal blue silk—soft and inviting, and Nathen mused if it was the softest bed he had ever been in. A gossamer canvas hung over them, causing the colors and shapes to be magnified, refracting hues neither had seen before. Aside from a blank wall where a door might have been, the rest of the walls boasted paintings, tapestries, and murals of nature, space, and other celestial imagery.

They were naked, but dry, and next to them was a dressing rack that held two sets of clothes in hues of green, blue, and white, with silver-and-gold scrollwork and an embroidered ivy motif.

Nathen looked around, speechless and fascinated. The frenzied ecstasy that had been crawling through his skin had evaporated, replaced with a peace he had never known existed.

Gasping for breath, Cameron shivered next to him. Nathen was startled when Cameron launched across the bed and grasped him. “I love you so much,” he wept, burying his head in Nathen’s neck. “I’m so sorry…”

Nathen smiled, patting Cameron and reading the pages of shame and guilt. “I love you too; no need to apologize. I know it was your shadow talking…”

They lay back, massaged by the silken bedclothes, curling up together. “Do you hear them?” Cameron didn’t need to ask, their channel was open and Nathen saw Cameron’s reading of over a thousand minds, most disturbingly alien, like Dara’s had been. However, he was able to locate three humans who he quickly pulled information from before shutting them out.

They both winced with the familiar beginning throb of a migraine that occurred when Cameron exerted his mental energy. “Fae court? There are three humans who have been here a very long time. Apparently, no one actually ages here. They are courtesans to various fae, pets if you will. They don’t know we’re here or anything about why we would be brought here, but the three of them came at different times and now live here. Apparently, we’re in an enormous castle or something.” He moaned softly when Nathen gently massaged his head.

Nathen lay in bed cuddling with Cameron for a while. Blankets were heaven on his naked body. Once Cameron’s headache subsided, Nathen gently slipped out of bed and said, “I’m going to get dressed and look around this place, though I don’t see a door…”

As Nathen slid
